Being in an accident is a stressful event for anyone. And sometimes this accident brings out the best and the worst in us in any given circumstances. The effect of road accidents is not only in the moment but this may bring a toll on your life for a week or even months. So here at Cosgrove Smash Repairs, we came up with a list to help you face this incident when it ever happens.
- KEEP CALM
During an accident, it’s so easy to rattle and be in shock. But keep your calm and take a deep breath. It’s also best not to accept or deny any liability on the scene. Politely approach the person you got involved with and calmly handle the conversation. Remember, what is said in the scene may be taken against you, and may result in a more stressful situation later on. In the event that you are injured, call 000 or proceed to the nearest health care provider ASAP.
- GATHER INFORMATION
Collect information like the complete name, rego, complete address, mobile number, make and model of the car, and insurance information of the other driver. If there are more than 2 cars involved try to ask as much information as you can from other drivers too. In the event that the other party is hesitant to provide information just get the rego and report to the police. Also, take note of the location of the accident and any landmarks in the surroundings. E.g: Infront of Conford Heritage Museum.
- TAKE PICTURES
Take photos of not just your car, but the car of the other party involved. Make sure to take as many angles as you can. If there is any skidmark on the road takes a photo of those, it greatly helps accessors on determining liability, later on. Also, take pictures of traffic signs and any relevant signage and also take a snapshot of the street where the accident happened. In the event that there were property damages (public or private) take photos of those E.g. Fences, Poles, etc.
On the other hand, if the accident happened at night, turn on your camera’s flash and still take photos, but check your car in the morning and take photos of the damages on your car.
- GET WITNESS
While a witness is not really necessary; their information comes in handy when your car was damaged while it’s parked, and no one left a note. Gather your witness’s name and mobile number, Make sure to take note of their involvement in the scene too (i.e.Pedestrian, bystander, driver, passenger)
If there is no witness, you may check nearby shops for CCTV footage, if it’s a street CCTV however, a Police report may need to be obtained before we can get footage file from the council.
- CHECK FOR SAFETY
While the damage to your car seems superficial, it’s best to check if it’s still safe to drive after an accident. Check if the door near the point of impact still shot flash, no fluid leaking, airbags did not deploy, or any light indicator on the dashboard advising any danger. Check for smashed signal lights, and if it’s still working. In addition, observe the condition of your car when driving, if the wheels swerve to the left or right then it would be best not to drive your car to avoid further damage.
