Realizing that you left your keys can be disheartening and frustrating.

Don’t panic. Accidentally leaving your keys inside the car does not make you an irresponsible driver. It means you are human and prone to mistakes. Hey, nobody’s perfect!

Accidentally leaving your car keys inside the car is unfamiliar territory to most people. It can cause considerable mental and physical stress. It can cause an outburst of negative emotions. This, however, is normal. This can happen to the best of us.

Before you panic, think about the circumstances that led to the situation of accidentally leaving your keys inside the car. You could have placed the keys in the seat while loading up your groceries or you could have just simply forgotten.

What do I do if I leave my keys inside my car?

If you get caught in this predicament, here are some tips that you can do:

1.  Assess the situation

Assessing the situation could help you figure out the best way to retrieve your keys. It would help you handle the situation smoothly and will allow you to think of solutions that can be used to unlock your car.

2.  Make sure to check all doors for alternative entry

Double-checking all doors for alternative entry eases the possibility of being locked out of your car. Check if you can get in from your trunk. Check for unrolled windows. This will help you save up time and money. If there is no alternative entry to your, keep calm.

3.  Make sure you have access to a set of spare keys

The golden rule of thumb. Keep a set of spare keys in your purse, bag, or inside your wallet. The Extra keys will make your life easier and prevent further damage to your car. If you don’t have your spare keys on hand, call your family or a friend that would be able to deliver your spare keys to you.

4.  Utilize DIY hacks that you have learned

Admit it. You have seen Youtube how-to videos. You might have even tried a couple of those hacks. You can utilize tools in order to unlock your car easily. However, this comes with a risk. Any DIY can eventually cause damage or affect the central locking system of your vehicle. What’s worst is this is not covered by insurance.

DIY can be easy and quick as long as you do it correctly. However, it takes time to master and use the correct tools. The kind of tricks that you can use will eventually depend on your car and the style of your door locks.

5.  Call A Professional

Do not be afraid of reaching out for assistance from professionals. These professionals have the right tools and can unlock your car safely and easily for you.

If you have roadside assistance from your insurance company, you can easily call them so that they can send out someone to unlock your car for you. If you don’t have a roadside assistance service, call the police. They will help you out in most cases. DO NOT CALL the emergency line unless in a life-threatening situation.

Some people are hesitant to call as they are worried about the cost and self-denial that they had left their keys inside the car. If you don’t want to call the police, call a towing company or an automotive locksmith to assist you in unlocking your car and retrieving your keys. Remember, this service does not come for free.

In scenarios like this, you may feel hopeless, and it is easy to think there is nothing you can do to retrieve your keys. Yet keep calm, be in the present,  and use the appropriate resources; you will be back in your car and on your way in no time.
